My
trail name is Sassafras, I am thirteen years old. I am hiking the Appalachian Trail to bring awarness to hunger. You can help by donating food to your local food bank to help those less fortunate than us. What I am doing is called a thru
hike which means I will be hiking all of the Appalachian Trail starting in Georgia and ending in Maine.
My journey started on March 21, 2013 and will go through September of
2013. My goal is to raise one pound of food for every mile I hike on
the trail for a total of 2,184 pounds.
I have been backpacking since I was eight years old and have already covered all of the Appalachian Trail in Maine and northern New Hampshire. I have also hiked the southern section of Virginia and the Southern half of Georgia. I hike with my Dad (Kaboose) who has been very supportive of my goals.

As a Girl Scout I have hiked 170 miles of the Appalachian Trail for their 100 year anniversary in honor of Mama Boots a Girl Scout leader that has taken Girl Scouts backpacking on the Appalachian Trail over the years.
Local hunger is prevalent in New Gloucester Maine, and has been increasing each year. Hunger prevents people from reaching their full potential. It is an epidemic that’s threatening our future. One out of every five families goes hungry. The New Gloucester food pantry needs our help to make sure that families do not go hungry, I believe that I can help by bringing attention to the issue we have here locally by Hiking for Hunger. My goal is to have 2,184 pounds of food donated to the New Gloucester Food bank by 8/31/2013. But it will not stop there, Girl Scouts of Maine Troop 3175 will be continuing this effort to raise food each month, I believe this is achievable and sustainable if we all join in to fight local hunger
I am partnering with the First Congregational Church of New Gloucester Missions team , New Gloucester Food Bank , Gray New Gloucester Middle School my local Girl Scout troop 3175 of New Gloucester Maine to help publicize my hike.
The New Gloucester Food Pantry is located at the Congregational Church, 19 Church Road, New Gloucester and is open the second (2nd) and fourth (4th) Saturday of every month from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. If you would like to make a money donation please send to New Gloucester Food Bank P.O. Box 114 New Gloucester Me 04260. All checks should be made out to the New Gloucester Food Bank and please note that it is in support of Sassafras's adventure. If you have any questions, please call (207) 926-3260.
